The Astros path to the World Series this year saw them enter the playoffs with the best record in the American League (106-56), earning home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Despite some tough, hard-fought games, the Astros did not drop a game in the division series (sweeping the Seattle Mariners 3-0) or American League Championship Series (sweeping the Yankees 4-0.)
The Houston Astros entered the World Series as the favorite against the surprise Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies came out of the National League as the Wild Card team, knocking off the Cardinals, Braves, and Padres to advance to the World Series. The Phillies ran out to a 2-1 series lead before the Astros battled back to take the title back home to Houston.
The Astros were led under the guidance of longtime Manager Dusty Baker. Baker is the only MLB manager to reach the playoffs and win a division title with five different teams. Under his leadership, the Astros have been to back-to-back World Series’ capturing this year’s title.
The Astros had a steady mix of great pitching and hitting through their regular and postseason run. MVP candidate Yordan Alvarez led the way on the offensive side, who hit .306 with 37 HRs. Kyle Tucker (30 HRs and 107 RBIs) and Astros great Jose Altuve (.300, 28 HRs.) While the offense shined during the season, so did the Astros pitchers. Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez led the team with 18 and 17 wins, respectively.
